    Coupling iterated Kolmogorov diffusions

    The Kolmogorov (1934) diffusion is the two-dimensional diffusion generated by real Brownian motion B and its time integral integral B d t. In this paper we construct successful co-adapted couplings for iterated Kolmogorov diffusions defined by adding iterated time integrals integral integral B d s d t,... as further components to the original Kolmogorov diffusion. A Laplace-transform argument shows it is not possible successfully to couple all iterated time integrals at once; however we give an explicit construction of a successful co-adapted coupling method for (B, integral B d t, integral integral B d s d t); and a more implicit construction of a successful co-adapted coupling method which works for finite sets of iterated time integrals

    Vehicle test report: South Coast technology electric conversion of a Volkswagen Rabbit

    The South Coast Technology Volkswagen Rabbit, was tested at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL) dynamometer facility and at JPL's Edwards Test Station (ETS). The tests were performed to characterize certain parameters of the South Coast Rabbit and to provide baseline data that will be used for the comparison of near term batteries that are to be incorporated into the vehicle. The vehicle tests were concentrated on the electrical drive system; i.e., the batteries, controller, and motor. The tests included coastdowns to characterize the road load, maximum effort acceleration, and range evaluation for both cyclic and constant speed conditions. A qualitative evaluation of the vehicle was made by comparing its constant speed range performance with those vehicles described in the document 'state of the Art assessment of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles'. The Rabbit performance was near to the best of the 1977 vehicles

    The environment in which a LORAN-C Timing Receiver may function effectively depends to a large extent on the techniques utilized to insure that interfering signals within the pass band of the unit are neutralized. The baseline performance manually operated timing receivers is discussed and the basic design considerations and necessary parameters for an automatic unit utilizing today's technology are established. Actual performance data is presented comparing the results obtained from a present generation timing receiver against a new generation microprocessor controlled automatic acquisition receiver. The achievements possible in a wide range of signal to noise situations are demonstrated

    Photoproduction of Xi off nucleons

    The photoproduction reaction γNKKΞ\gamma N \to K K \Xi is investigated based on a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. The production amplitude is calculated in the tree-level approximation from relevant effective Lagrangians, whose (coupling constant) parameters are mostly fixed from the empirical data and/or quark models together with SU(3) symmetry considerations. Gauge invariance of the resulting amplitude is maintained by introducing the contact currents by extending the gauge-invariant approach of Haberzettl for one-meson photoproduction to two-meson photoproduction. The role of the intermediate low-lying hyperons and of the intermediate higher-mass hyperon resonances are analyzed in detail. In particular, the basic features of the production of Ξ(1318)\Xi^-(1318) in γpK+K+Ξ\gamma p \to K^+ K^+ \Xi^- and their possible manifestations in the forthcoming experimental data are discussed.Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, REVTeX, 1 figure added, to appear in Phys.     William Arbuthnot Lane (1856-1943): Surgical Innovator and His Theory of Autointoxication.

    William Arbuthnot Lane contributed to the advancement of many fields of orthopedics, otolaryngology, and general surgery. He is credited for his no-touch technique and the invention of long-handled instruments, some of which are still in use today, to minimize tissue handling. He is most well known for his hypothesis that slowing of gastric contents could cause a variety of ailments and this became known as Lane\u27s disease. Although his surgical treatment of Lane\u27s disease is now defunct, it advanced the surgical technique in colorectal surgery. It seems likely that some of Lane\u27s autointoxication patients would be classified today as patients with colonic inertia, diverticulitis, colonic volvulus, and megacolon or, which are all treated with colectomy. Lane was a pioneer in multiple fields and a true general surgeon. He advanced colorectal surgery immensely and propelled the field of surgery into a new era

    Heteromysis cocoensis n. sp. (Crustacea: Mysida: Mysidae) from coastal waters of Isla del Coco, Costa Rica

    A survey of the invertebrate fauna of coral reef hard bottom communities in the shallow waters of Isla del Coco yielded a new species of mysid belonging to the genus Heteromysis S. I. Smith, 1873. Heteromysis (Olivemysis) cocoensis, n. sp. was collected from coral rubble at depths of 8 to 34 m. It differs from its congeners by having male pleopods 1, 3, and 4 with modified setae. Within the subgenus Olivemysis Băcescu, 1968, the new species is morphologically most similar to Heteromysis. ekamako Wittmann and Chevaldonne, 2017 from the Pacific, Heteromysis. gomezi Băcescu, 1970, H. mayana Brattegard, 1970, and H. rubrocinta, Băcescu, 1968 from the Western Atlantic, and Heteromysis. dardani Wittmann, 2008, Heteromysis. wirtzi Wittmann, 2008, and Heteromysis. sabelliphila Wittmann and Wirtz, 2017 from the Eastern Atlantic. However, H. cocoensis n. sp. is distinguished from these six apparently closely related species by the following combination of characters: flagellate, modified setae on articles 1 and 3 of the antennular peduncle, and setation of thoracic endopod 3, male pleopods 1, 3 and 4, uropodal endopods, and the apical and lateral margins of the telson.
